Alaska Outtakes--Anchored in the Cook Inlet.

Day 1 in Anchorage. About an hour before meeting the crab fisherman, it's been 5 hours, and I'm still trying to figure out the camera buttons. I know what I want to do, but how do I make this thing go? Start by simplifying. Go with what you know, and don't try to learn more than three things. So I go with manual control, and I dedicate this hour to a mental remapping of these three: exposure, focus, and color. My hotel window faces the sunset, across the Cook Inlet, so I steady the camera on the sill and experiment. Some of the pinpoints of light are "ghost lights," caused by the window glass, a sort of effects filter for my lens.
