Alaska Top Ten--Dry martini.
Day 1 in Anchorage. It's been four hours since pulling the cameras out of the bag. No luck so far, still learning the buttons. While I shoot patterns on the side of my hotel building, I'm interrupted. A man, weaving down the sidewalk, stops and asks me to go inside and get him a Sprite. I take it that he wants some cash, "All I have is a credit card." "I'll take that!" Instead, I go into my hotel and bring out some food. "Here, get some calories so you don't get cold tonight." In the midst of conversation, he whips out a bottle from his wool coat and takes a swig, whoa. No wonder the weaving toward me. Now he weaves away, drinking the milk I gave him. I find out later that you can be fined big if you give money to anybody, but food is allowable, thank goodness; can't be heartless. Miraculously, I see him later in the evening ("I know you!"), and happen to have another milk…
People have mixed reactions to this image--some are entertained, some are uncomfortable--but I see it as a social issue that needs to be addressed. Don't hide from him, help him turn a corner. I hope I entertained him enough to enjoy another day.
