Alaska Top Ten--Flying over Denali 5.
Day 2 over Denali National Park. After landing on a glacier on a windless, blue day, our chief pilot flies us down the Ruth Gorge to depart Denali National Park. He's flown Alaska for "31 years tomorrow," he says. My view in the copilot seat is special, but the prop blades and curved canopy distort almost all images, making them unusable. I decide to feature the pilot, figuring a vignette with his silhouette is my best chance. But one time--just once, for nine seconds--the sun illuminates the cockpit such that I can see his face, luckily with a mountain scene out the window. Finally. Art is individual, but what I see here is 31 years of deliberation and wonder with every flight.
